Agile- not so common sense

Women in Technology and ThoughtWorks would like to invite you to an evening networking event on Monday 7th November 2011 at 6.30pm in Manchester: ‘Agile – not so common sense’.

The keynote speaker for the evening will be Luke Barrett, Managing Director at ThoughtWorks, Europe. Luke Barrett joined the organisation in 2004, initially as an Interaction Designer and later as a Senior Business Analyst before taking up the Market Principal role for ThoughtWorks’ Manchester office, where he was instrumental in setting up operations. Luke goes back to basics in the session and focuses on what ThoughtWorks has learned about the discipline required to deliver on the intuitive and compelling promise of an Agile way of working.

ThoughtWorks has championed an Agile approach to delivering software solutions to business problems for over ten years now. For many people this highly iterative feedback focused process is an intuitive and compelling way of achieving the type of outcomes other approaches systematically fail to deliver. At its core is the heartbeat of testing and refining an evolving software solution in multiple time-boxed iterations which is appealingly simple – and is gaining wider and wider adoption – but doing it well has proved elusive for many.

Q&A Session
After Luke’s presentation there will be a panel Q&A session with Luke as well as:
* Chrissie Auton, Agile Coach at Shop Direct
* Gemma Cameron, Co-founder of Manchester Girl Geek Dinners
* Antonia Phoenix, Head of Software Development at ReThink Recruitment and Member of the Institute of Recruitment Professionals

The Q&A will be followed by drinks.

The event is free to attend, but places must be booked.

Lean Startup Machine

This a bootcamp on Lean Startup methodologies.

Contrary to popular perception, the phrase “lean startup” implies much more than capital efficiency. It encompasses a paradigm-shifting way of thinking about how to build new companies and products, and how to bring those products to market faster.

At Lean Startup Machine participants are provided with a valuable framework of tools, techniques and resources designed to help early-stage companies identify key customers and iterate their products quickly. Startups face incredibly difficult odds, and the vast majority of them will fail. While lean startup methodologies are not a safeguard against failure, they do provide a foundation for real, measurable improvement.

The lean startup process can be summarized as following:

1. Outlining the assumptions you have about your customer (or your customer’s beliefs)
2. Creating an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) – the bare basics of what you plan to build, for the purpose of maximing the amount of learning you can acquire from potential customers
3. Testing your assumptions and determining if they are correct or not
4. Rapidly iterating, making changes based on customer feedback
5. Major focus on Customer Development, iterating and pivoting based on the feedback you receive

Public Sector Income Generation

Having to manage with less central government funding over the next five years is a sizeable challenge, the spending cuts are truly unprecedented and authorities must continue to ensure they have adequate resources to meet the needs of their communities. To help manage the budget shortfalls local authorities have been given greater freedoms and powers to run their own affairs. At the centre of an array of measures the general power of competence means authorities will have “all the same powers that an individual generally has, which will enable them to do anything apart from that which is specifically prohibited”. Councils can use the power to set up banks, develop property, run new services and own assets. There are new opportunities to innovate, stimulate economic growth and reap the rewards from any funds raised.

In addition the Open Public Services White Paper sets out new rights for public sector staff to start their own enterprise with over £10m of funding to support new mutuals and joint ventures. The plans give greater autonomy to existing public sector services and enable independent organisations to take on services. The aim is to drive up quality, ensure value for money and open up services to new partners and providers who can provide finance, innovation and expertise. Under proposals in the local government resource review, local authorities will have greater financial autonomy and could be allowed to keep a larger share of the money they receive from business rates. The aim is to attract business into their areas, regenerate local economies and “ensure the benefits of economic growth are reflected in the resources councils have”. Driving economic growth at a local level could see councils financially rewarded for supporting local firms and creating jobs rather than being reliant on central grants. There are new opportunities to utilise the public sector estate, make the most of intellectual property and collaborate with commercial partners to create revenue.

At Public Sector Income Generation you can learn how to raise funds, provide a return of surplus or help to offset service charges. Income can be generated by providing chargeable services, advertising space, cash-collecting services, utilising renewable energy and delivering back office functions for other organisations.

Chair: Colin Cram
