Only the most determined women thrive in the alien, male-dominated techie corner of the office. But the few who have would like to see more bright young women join them in this fast-moving and well-paid sector. Both Justine’s and Eileen’s stories are relevant to all would be entrepreneurs of either sex, as they talk about the challenges they have faced and how they have overcome them. Both funny, down to earth, and honest these are two inspirational stories you don’t want to miss

Justine Carrell Director for the Center of Technology and Social Behaviour and a full professor in the departments of Communication Studies and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Northwestern University.

This is a real coup for Aberdeen Justine as received the Anita Borg “Women of Vision” Leadership award in 2008.> To give you an idea of just how awesome that is… there are only three Anita Borg awards each year — one for innovation, one for social impact, and one for leadership. They are extremely prestigious and winners include high profile individuals like Kristina M. Johnson the Under Secretary for Energy, US Department of Energy. (WOW!)

Justine will share her journey from the early days when her high school principal wrote a letter to her parents to let them know she was unlikely to be accepted to any programme given her performance in her science classes to being told at university by a faculty member that even smart people have a hard time being inter disciplinary” Justine has had many experiences where people have assumed she is somebody’s secretary or student, rather than being the professor.

In her youth, Justine would pour over novels and write down favourite words in a notebook. Quickly, this fascination for words and storytelling turned into a love of what she calls, "the science of language" which eventually led her to a Master's degree in Literature, a Master's in Linguistics, and two PhD’s in Linguistics and Psychology.

After more than ten years of study, she first applied her knowledge and interest in language development and communication to the technological advances found at the University of Pennsylvania Center of Human Simulation, where she designed a computer-generated intelligent character that possessed speech, gestures and facial expressions. This experience marked the beginning of Justine's interest in technology and its potential as an innovative tool for child development, online communication and virtual storytelling.

Justine love’s travelling to obscure places, eating obscure foods, learning about new cultures and meeting new people and dancing!

Eileen Brown from Ships to Chips – CEO Amastra,

Eileen was profiled in Management Today magazine alongside other top profile businesswomen when she worked at Microsoft UK managing their Pro Evangelist Team.

When you've been the first female navigation officer in the merchant navy, scaling the heights of the IT world doesn't present much of a problem. True, in the early days, Eileen Brown was sometimes mistaken for the PA rather than the technical expert, but that didn't deter her.

With no computing qualifications, she advanced rapidly from creating a spreadsheet for tracking shipping to technical consultancy at HP before a management job at Microsoft UK and then leaving to start her own company.

Brown feels women are a great asset to technology companies. 'They're natural problem-solvers and great communicators. If a woman has found a new product she finds really useful, she wants to tell the world about it.

Eileen is an accomplished and well-known international speaker and expert on Social Media, Online Branding, Web 2.0, Unified Communications and Systems Architecture and is a key advocate for the advancement of Women in Technology. She explores the art of the possible, looking at how technology is changing the world we live in, simplifying work and making you more productive.

Away from work, she makes jam and chutney in awesome quantities, tends her flock of chickens, and grows organic vegetables and fruit and races around the countryside in her home built 6.6 litre cobra replica car. As much as possible, whenever she encounters warmer waters, she scuba dives as much as possible to get away from the phone...

Come and join our friendly crowd for a light dinner, networking and the chance to see the rising stars of our generation. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
